Event Details

Afterschool programs have a responsibility to educate youth and build their skills to be successful adults. The goal of this training will be to learn what the California Department of Education’s content standards are and how participants can integrate them into their programs. Participants will walk away with an overview of content standards, samples of curriculum that incorporate content standards, and one lesson plan they created that includes content standards.

Attendees will gain knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • the difference between academics and learning;
  • the background of the California State Content Standards and what they are;
  • Strategies and tools on integrating learning;
  • One lesson they can implement immediately.

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS:

Kathleen Martinez, Creative Out of School Learning

Kathleen Martinez has been in education for lots of years starting as a remedial reading teacher, then a university professor in education, curriculum developer, director of community based services for emotionally disturbed children. She did these things all in northern New Mexico. She started working in afterschool work in 2000. Her first job in that area was at CNYD and has been an independent consultant since 2001.  She has written two books, “Fun Literacy Activities for After School Programs,” and “Colossal Clubs.”  Her major contracts are with the ExCEL program in SF, and with DCYF providing training and technical assistance especially in areas of academics. Her company is called Creative-Out-Of-School Learning.

Diane Colquhoun, Hayward Rec Connect

I am the program coordinator for Hayward Rec Connect, which is a community center located in the Western Edition.  We offer a range of services including academic support, arts education, health education, recreation, and youth leadership.  During the school day we offer programs for preschool age children, and after school we offer programs for elementary school, middle school, and high school students.  As program coordinator, my job is to plan community programs.  I organize the program schedule, perform outreach, teach some of the courses, do the marketing for the classes, and supervise the other Hayward Rec Connect employees.

Leah Weitz, Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center's Excelsior Teen Center

I am Leah Weitz, activist and artist, pirate/ gypsy, Love Warrior,  astrology and tarot card fanatic, photographer and creative mind.  Check me out at Frisco Renaissance

as well as at Lady Bird SF

these are two of my independents projects, that keep me sane as a human. =)

My passion and realization of the importance of after school programing in our current educational system was sparked at the age of 15, when I became politicized through the work of Ella Baker Center’s Third Eye Movement 415.I was given the opportunity to witness the collective voice of a community and the power that it held for us as a people.  I was also exposed to all the smoke an mirrors around us that prevent us from seeing the truth. (ie. Racism, classism, ageism, haterism, old money etc…)    So, in my adult hood I am here to aquire the skills to help aid and heal our communities so that we can all be better for each other, and our future. Each One Teach One.

But professionally I’m currently work for The Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center’s Excelsior Teen Center as their new Site Coordinator.

Jason Wyman has been in the field of youth development for over 15 years. He started by supporting a youth philanthropy program in Minneapolis Unified School District and worked his way up to become the Educational Program Director at the OMI/Excelsior Beacon Center where he brought school, youth, and community together to address the academic, civic, and mental health needs of the student population. From there he launched into supporting the next generation of youth workers by creating trainings, resources, and networking opportunities through Beacon Academy, the Afterschool Corps, and the Youth Worker: Collective. He worked as the Director of School-Community Relations at Excelsior Middle School and directed the Change! Program, the community engagement program at EMS. Jason has been involved with the Youth Worker: Collective since 2003, and he is excited to be the first staff of theYouth Worker: Collective. When he is not advocating for youth and families, Jason enjoys cooking, reading, and hanging out with his husband.

This training is facilitated by Youth Worker: Collective, funded by DCYF as part of the AFATAC Leadership Tracks.
